Designer Makes Hypoallergenic Jewelry Out of Cardboard

Darcie Toom’s metal allergy has made wearing jewelry next to impossible, but some good came from it — it was the catalyst for her company. Iconilink necklaces and pendants are interchangeable, lightweight, ecofriendly and won’t leave a rash if metal doesn’t agree with your skin.

Darcie designed all the shapes and the colorful patterns they bear. Iconilink lives on Etsy, and she also sells in person at craft fairs in the Midwest.

Challenge

When starting her company, the first obstacle she ran into was determining which materials to use for her jewelry. Plastic was expensive to cast and sharp if cut out with a blade.

Her solution was an ecofriendly cardboard that is finished in a water-based sealer. She just needed a sharp blade to make accurate, clean cuts.

Solution
